Alex Griffin is a drummer, percussionist, and educator in Denver, CO. He has played and studied many styles of music, from pop, funk and rock music, to salsa, jazz, country and metal, and everything else in between. He has played with a variety of bands, including the Sway Party Band, Old Growth; Ancient Forest, Krush, Voz de la Clave, Larimer Lights and many more.
Alex grew up in Washington State, and began to play drums around age 9. In high school he transitioned into taking lessons at the Seattle Drum School, where he studied with owner Steve Smith (himself a student of Jim Chapin), Davis Martin of Maktub and LeRoy Bell and his Only Friends, Jason McGerr of Death Cab for Cutie, Andy Roth, and many more of SDS's worldclass faculty. After graduating high school, he enrolled as a performance major at University of Colorado, Denver, where he studied drum set, percussion, and piano with Todd Reid, Drew Morell, Peter Stoltzman, Thomas Vanschoick, and Peter Ellingson. He later transferred to Principia College, where he studied hand percussion and drum set with UMSL Director of Percussion Matt Henry, and jazz drum set and composition with Tomas Fujiwara of Thumbscrew and Ensemble Kolossus.
Whenever he is not playing music, Alex enjoys the great outdoors with his beautiful wife, Beth.
